# The complete guide to Portugal — built to be trusted

**Ultimate Portugal** exists to be the single best English-language resource for anyone whose
life intersects with Portugal — whether you're planning a week in Lisbon or moving your family
to the Algarve. Most resources do *either* tourism *or* relocation, and almost none pair good
content with a directory you can actually trust. We do both, on purpose.

## Who writes this

Ultimate Portugal is written and edited by [**Rex McIntosh**](https://ultimateportugal.com/authors/rex-mcintosh), who
moved to Portugal from abroad in 2022 with his wife and three children. They rented first,
then bought a home in Oeiras, and Portugal is where the family is staying. Every guide carries
his byline and the date its facts were last checked, and the regulatory guides link out to the
official Portuguese source so you can verify anything yourself.

He is not a lawyer, an accountant or a tax adviser, and nothing on this site is professional
advice. What he has is first-hand experience of the process and a commitment to telling you
when something was last verified.

## Who this is for

- **Movers & expats** — visas, residency, the IFICI/NHR tax regime, getting a NIF, healthcare,
schools, cost of living, and navigating AIMA.
- **Visitors** — itineraries, the best time to go, getting around, where to stay, and the
 experiences worth your time.
- **People doing both** — the visitor today who becomes a resident tomorrow. Our city hubs
 answer both questions at once.

Editorial and independence policy

Trust is the entire point of this site. Here's how we protect it:

- **Our picks can't be bought.** Editorial recommendations and directory curation are based on
quality and relevance. A business cannot pay to be recommended or to rank higher in our
 editorial judgement.
- **Affiliate links are disclosed.** Some outbound links earn us a commission at no extra cost
to you. This helps keep the site free and independent. It never changes which providers we
recommend. Where a page contains affiliate links, we say so.
- **Nobody can pay to appear in the directory.** Not to be listed, not to rank higher, not to
be featured. There are no sponsored placements. If that ever changes, any paid placement will
be clearly labelled and kept separate from our editorial verdict.
- **We keep regulatory content current.** Portuguese immigration and tax rules change often.
Our guides on those topics carry a visible "last verified" date, and we update them as the
rules move (for example, the shift from NHR to IFICI and from SEF to AIMA).
- **Guidance, not professional advice.** Our content is careful general information — not
legal, tax, or medical advice. For your specific situation, confirm with a qualified
professional or the relevant official body.

## How the directory works

**Every entry is something we have personally used or belong to.** That is the whole bar, and
it is why the list is short. Being established, well reviewed or widely recommended is not a
qualification on its own — if we have not dealt with a business ourselves, it is not in there.
Each listing says what our basis for it was, in plain terms.

Where we have not used anyone in a category, it stays **empty and says so** rather than being
filled from a search results page. An earlier version of this directory held 57 entries
gathered from research rather than experience. They were real companies, but we had not dealt
with them, so they came out. Businesses can [apply to be listed](https://ultimateportugal.com/directory/submit), and the
answer is usually that we need to use them first.
