The Algarve is Portugal's holiday south and, for a huge international community, its retirement home too. Stretching roughly 150km from the Spanish border to the wild Atlantic cape at Sagres, it packs in honeyed sandstone cliffs, calm family beaches, surf coves, marshland lagoons and championship golf. This is a *region*, not a single town — and where you land matters enormously. The eastern end is gentler and more authentically Portuguese; the central strip is the busy tourist core; the west is rugged and wind-blown. The **A22 motorway** runs the length of the coast (tolled), and a slower train line links Lagos to Faro and beyond.
