# Cost of living calculator: your life in Portugal

An interactive calculator. A reader gives their home now (bedrooms; rent, mortgage or owned; optional floor area), enters monthly spending by category in their own currency, and sees what the same basket costs in a chosen Portuguese town, in their currency and in euros. Figures checked 25 September 2026. An estimate for planning, not a quote.

## Method

1. International price comparisons (purchasing power parities) say what the same basket costs in two countries, by category: the Eurostat-OECD 2024 results, or the World Bank ICP 2021 for Brazil and South Africa.
2. Each comparison is brought forward to the latest month with both countries' own consumer price index for that category. Where a country publishes no current index for a category, its all-items index is used.
3. Money is converted at the latest official euro rate: the ECB reference rates, via Eurostat. The Colombian peso, Chilean peso and Costa Rican colón are quoted per US dollar (Colombia's daily TRM from the Superintendencia Financiera; the OECD's monthly average for the other two) and crossed to euros with Eurostat's euro-dollar rate for the same day or month.
4. For the US, the BEA regional price parities adjust for the reader's metro area.
5. Energy is compared only for European countries; elsewhere it is converted at the exchange rate.
6. Rent is INE's median rent per m² for new leases in the chosen town, times a floor-area band. Tax, one-off moving costs and school fees are not included.

## Portugal's prices against each country, by category

The same basket, priced in Portugal, against the home country at the latest official exchange rate: 24 September 2026, except the Chilean peso and Costa Rican colón (the August 2026 average) and the Albanian lek, Macedonian denar and Serbian dinar (31 August 2026). −30% means the basket costs 30% less in Portugal. Prices outside rent are national averages.

## Monthly rent by town

INE median rent for new leases in the 12 months to March 2026, times 50–80 m² for one bedroom, 75–110 m² for two, 110–180 m² for three and 140–200 m² for four or more (gross private area). On the page, a reader can give their own floor area instead. Where INE does not split a town by size, the town median is scaled by its region's split. Rounded to €10.

## School fees

With children, each child gets a Portugal school: a state school (no tuition from age 6 to 18), one of five international schools priced from their own 2026/27 fee pages (checked 2026-09-16), or today's spending. Monthly school cost is tuition plus required yearly charges divided by 12; application, registration and levy fees are shown as first-year cash.
