How to read your result
- Each figure is what the same basket costs in Portugal: the same kind of food, the same meals out, the same fares. It is not what a typical Portuguese household spends.
- Prices outside rent are national averages. Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve run above them, and inland towns below.
- Rent is the median for new leases in the town you pick, for the same number of bedrooms as your home now. Give your floor area for one figure instead of a range. Many homes on the market ask more than the median.
- Tax is not included. Income tax, social security and property tax are different in Portugal. Our IFICI checker shows the income tax side.
- One-off costs are not included: the move, deposits, furniture or buying a car.
- Giving up a car adds the town's official monthly transit pass, from the operator's own 2026 fares: one per adult, or one per car given up if you keep some. Where we have no single official fare, add your own.
- The income check uses what you earn now, after tax. The visa figures are for the main applicant only.
For whole example budgets, read our cost of living guide. To compare towns side by side, use compare cities.
How we work it out
- International price comparisons say what the same basket costs in two countries, category by category. The newest full set is the Eurostat-OECD programme for 2024. For Brazil and South Africa it is the World Bank's 2021 programme.
- We bring those forward to today with each country's own monthly price index for the same category, for Portugal and for your country. That is how the OECD updates its own price levels between releases.
- Your money is converted at the latest official euro rate, so every figure shows in your currency and in euros. For most currencies that is a day's rate. The Chilean peso and Costa Rican colón have no official daily euro rate, so we use the latest official monthly average, for August 2026. The result names the date of the rate it used.
- In the US we also allow for your metro area, with the Bureau of Economic Analysis's regional price levels.
- Energy has a price comparison only for European countries. Elsewhere it is converted at the exchange rate.
